Sep 22 (Field Level Media) – New York City FC claimed former MLS Defender of the Year Matt Miazga off waivers from FC Cincinnati on Tuesday.
The New Jersey native joins NYCFC through the end of the 2026 season after being waived earlier this month.
The 31-year-old veteran was the MLS Defender of the Year and made the MLS Best XI and All-Star teams in 2023.
“We’re excited to welcome Matt to New York City,” sporting director Todd Dunivant said. “Matt brings experience, mentality, and a competitive edge to our backline. His leadership will be valuable as we enter the final stretch of the season.”
Miazga has recorded three goals and eight assists in 122 career MLS games (114 starts) with the New York Red Bulls (2013-15) and Cincinnati (2022-26). His teams captured MLS Supporters’ Shields in 2013, 2015 and 2023.
NYCFC are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Cincinnati and the Red Bulls in the race for nine postseason spots.
“I’m really excited to join New York City FC and get straight to work,” Miazga said. “We have an important stretch ahead of us, and I’m ready to do everything I can to help the team compete for the playoffs and make a strong run through the rest of the season.”
