KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – With the results of the election done, the Kalamazoo County board could decide later today if they will ask voters for more money on the August ballot to support pre-school childcare early learning programs in the county.
At issue is the fact that if young families can find available childcare, they may not be able to afford it. Proponents argue that it hurts the children if they aren’t exposed to early learning and hurts parents because they have to choose between working and childcare, and that hurts the economy.
Opponents say it adds another bill to the already high cost of housing, and taxes are already too high.
The county board is divided on the question.
Board chair Jen Strebs says the resolution on the agenda leaves it up to the voters.
Commissioner Dale DeLeeuw says that’s the way it should be.
The request would be for half a mill, which would raise nearly $6.4 million next year.
The question would appear on the August 4th primary ballot.
