CONVIS TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 51-year-old Bellevue man early Thursday morning following a violent home invasion and a tense 45-minute standoff in Convis Township.
The incident began around 1:56 a.m., when deputies responded to a breaking and entering in progress at the Bellevue Trailer Park located at 23915 15 Mile Road.
The suspect, who was known to the residents, shattered a front window of the home and attempted to climb inside.
Alert neighbors who heard screams rushed to intervene, physically pulling the suspect out of the window and preventing him from getting further inside.
Before fleeing to his own nearby residence, the suspect also shattered a window on a vehicle parked at the scene. Investigators later recovered a large kitchen knife left behind, which they believe the suspect brought with him to the home.
Upon arriving at the suspect’s residence, deputies spotted movement inside, but the man repeatedly ignored commands to surrender. After nearly an hour, deputies saw the suspect crawling on the floor; when told he was under arrest, he stood up, approached a front window, and began harming himself.
The suspect eventually walked out onto the front porch but continued to disregard police orders, prompting deputies to deploy a Taser to safely take him into custody.
He received immediate medical attention on-site from the Marshall Area Fire Fighters Ambulance Authority before being transported to Bronson Battle Creek Hospital for further evaluation.
The suspect, whose identity is currently being withheld, was later booked into the Calhoun County Jail on charges of Home Invasion, Damage to Property, and Obstructing Police.
