COLDWATER, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The 20-year-old Haitian national accused of fatally stabbing his coworker during a workplace dispute at the Clemens meat processing plant last week was in the United States illegally, according to federal immigration officials.
Valmir Djempsley faces an open murder charge in the June 30 killing of 21-year-old Brandon Eduardo Velasquez Chavez at the Clemens Food Group facility.
Witnesses told police the two men argued over a knife on the production line before Djempsley allegedly chased Chavez and stabbed him in the back.
Chavez died at the scene despite life saving efforts.
In a statement Acting DHS Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis. said ” This illegal alien barbarically stabbed his coworker to death, this murderer was released into American communities by the Biden Administration. If it weren’t for the reckless open border policies , this criminal never would have been in our country in the first place and his victim would still be alive. We have lodged a detainer asking Michigan to not release this dangerous criminal from jail without notifying ICE.”
Djempsley pleaded not guilty at his arraignment last week and remains in the Branch County jail without bond.
The case has drawn attention to immigration enforcement as prosecutors emphasize the severity of the crime and note Djempsley will face deportation regardless of the criminal outcome.
He is scheduled for a preliminary exam on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
