PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A suspect is still at large as the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into an assault Sunday afternoon in Pennfield Township.
Just after 4:00 p.m. deputies were called to a convenience store in the 1300 block of Capital Avenue NE. A witness said two males were involved in a physical altercation inside the store, with a store employee appearing to be involved.
Deputies say the victim, a store employee, sustained serious injuries, including a significant laceration to the abdomen. Deputies provided immediate medical assistance until personnel from the Pennfield Fire Department and Lifecare EMS arrived.
According to the victim, the assault was unprovoked and occurred after he asked the suspect to leave the store. The victim was transported to a local hospital for further treatment and observation.
The suspect fled the scene prior to deputies’ arrival. Deputies obtained surveillance video from the area and were able to identify the suspect through prior law enforcement contacts. The suspect’s vehicle was also identified, prompting an immediate canvass of the surrounding area.
During the canvass, deputies located the suspect vehicle in the 100 block of McKinley Avenue North. The vehicle was unoccupied, and deputies continued searching the area. A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle to recover any evidence related to the incident.
The suspect has been identified as a 33-year-old Battle Creek resident, with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office actively attempting to locate the suspect.
A warrant request has been submitted to the Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office for the charge of Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm Less Than Murder.
