BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The City of Battle Creek has begun the search for its next chief of police following Chief Shannon Bagley’s announcement that he will retire by the end of 2026.
The city officials say they have retained Public Sector Search and Consulting to conduct a national search for the department’s next leader. The recruitment period begins this Friday and will remain open for four weeks.
Candidate review is expected to begin in October.
Bagley joined the Battle Creek Police Department as deputy chief of investigations in September 2021. He was appointed interim chief of police in January 2023 and named chief of police in June 2023.
While serving as chief, he also assumed interim leadership of the Battle Creek Fire Department from September 2024 through April 2026.
Before joining the BCPD, Bagley retired from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety in 2018 after 25 years of service. He then joined the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Public Safety Department, where he held the rank of captain.
Following the application period, candidate materials will be reviewed in October.
The city anticipates hosting a community meet-and-greet event with finalist candidates in November, along with formal interviews as part of the selection process.
