KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – You’ve probably heard of portals for transferring student athletes.
Western Michigan University and Kellogg Community College have taken the concept a step further, signing an agreement that will make it easier for any grad from the Battle Creek community college to go to WMU.
They are calling it the Bronco Bound Guarantee. Admission is automatic and transfers will be considered for annual scholarships ranging from $500 to $3000.
WMU associate vice president for enrollment management Dr. Kristen Salomonson says the process will be frictionless and free.
Presidents Russ Kavalhuna and Dr. Paul Watson II held a signing ceremony to make it official at the WMU Student Center Wednesday.
WMU already has a similar open-door policy for graduates from Kalamazoo Valley Community College, and Kavalhuna says it should be a model for others.
KCC President Watson says for generations students have come to KCC to find their beginning.
Students making the jump must also meet academic and conduct requirements.
The agreement also makes all KCC students eligible for complimentary admission to Bronco athletic events, whether they plan to transfer or not.
Many colleges and universities are already removing barriers to enrollment to attract a dwindling pool of high school grads and transfers to their institutions.
They are also focusing on attracting non-traditional students, like working adults, and enhancing support services and scholarship programs to keep students who have already been admitted from dropping out.
