RICHLAND, MI (WTVB) – The Gull Lake High School varsity football season will proceed under interim head coach Josh Cunningham following separate investigations into alleged assaults involving team members.
The Gull Lake Community Schools district announced the appointment of Cunningham, after placing head coach Jalon Simpson on paid, non-disciplinary administrative leave.
The ongoing investigations by both the district and the Michigan State Police stem from two incidents of “Title IX actions” during a team camp in Oceana County.
Gull Lake Superintendent Drew Bordner says that Cunningham will continue preparing the team for the upcoming season while maintaining a safe and positive environment for the student-athletes.
The decision to move forward with the season came during an intense four-hour special Board of Education meeting where frustrated parents and community members heavily criticized school leadership.
Parents vocally demanded greater transparency regarding the June incident, with at least one father expressing deep concern over his son’s safety and threatening to transfer his child out of the district.
While Board President Carole Mendez and state troopers emphasized that details must remain confidential to protect the integrity of the open investigation, the district has committed to providing regular updates directly to football families as the case moves toward the Oceana County Prosecutor’s Office
