PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A massive, fiery house explosion completely leveled a home on Rollaway Drive early Tuesday morning, leaving at least two people injured and another man unaccounted for.
According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, the blast occurred just before 4:00 a.m. and was powerful enough to rock neighboring properties up to three miles away.
Heroic neighbors rushed to the burning home after hearing cries for help, pulling a woman from the debris. She was transported to a local hospital in serious condition, while a neighbor who assisted was treated at the scene for injuries to his hands.
Emergency crews from five different fire departments responded to the scene to battle the intense flames, which also scorched a vehicle in the driveway and scattered debris across the neighborhood. Kent County Undersheriff Bryan Muir says that a male homeowner associated with the address remains missing, but the structural remains are currently too hot and dangerous for investigators or cadaver dogs to safely enter and search.
Representatives from DTE Energy and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are assisting local law enforcement in what is expected to be a lengthy investigation into the cause of the blast.
Officials emphasize that this appears to be an isolated incident with no remaining danger to the general public.
