KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – All the organizations that have received federal COVID-19 recovery grants from Kalamazoo County will be given a given a deadline to use it or lose it.
Kalamazoo County received over $51 million five years ago this month from Congress to reimburse local governments for losses due to the pandemic, and to set up programs to help their communities recover.
Any money not spent by December 31st has to be shipped back to Washington, and local officials want to make sure that doesn’t happen, by establishing a September 1st local deadline.
County board chair Jen Strebs says they should give the recipients plenty of notice.
County Administrator Kevin Catlin says there are plenty of things internally they could fund that would qualify under the federal guidelines, including jail repairs.
A few commissioners had other proposals that might also be funded with any money that isn’t spent or committed by the end of summer, four months lead time will give them an opportunity to sort it out.
The proposal gives the recipients until the end of summer to expend, reimburse, or otherwise contractually obligate any money they received from the American Rescue Plan Act.
