MARSHALL, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – After months of work, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will be completing the first phase of the $335 million Marshall Modernization Project when the new M-96 (Michigan Avenue) interchange with I-69 in Marshall reopens with one lane open in each direction, which is expected by Tuesday, November 25.
MDOT officials say the new interchange is a diverging diamond interchange (DDI) and is the first of three rebuilding projects in this area.
To navigate a DDI, drivers follow signs, signals and pavement markings to cross to the left side of the roadway after the first set of traffic signals. Vehicles going straight proceed through a second set of traffic signals and cross back to the right side of the road. All left turns onto the freeway are free flowing.
While the new interchange will open to traffic in the coming days, crews still will be working into December to install signs and pavement markings, and completing other finishing work.
Work in 2026 will include rebuilding the I-94 interchange at M-311 (11 Mile Road) and the M-311/M-96 intersection.
In 2027, M-96 will be converted into a four-lane boulevard between M-311 and I-69.
MDOT’s YouTube channel features a video showing how drivers navigate the I-96/Cascade Road DDI in Grand Rapids Township, Kent County.
