PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The city of Portage has just completed a couple of successful collections.
Their now-annual Battle of the Bins was a food drive that pitted the fans of Portage Northern and Portage Central high schools and was tied in with their annual football game.
Council members Jihan Young and Nicole Miller organized the drive to capitalize on the rivalry, collecting nearly two tons of food the local food bank, Twelve Baskets.
Young says they may not wait until next fall to try it again.
Miller thanked the staff at Portage City Hall for helping them transport it all after they weighed it all.
Bins were placed at City Hall and both high schools.
Portage Central not only contributed 700 pounds more than Northern, but they also won the game 30-0.
They may find a use for the food before the holidays with the federal government shutdown entering its second month and SNAP payments threatened.
