SPRINGFIELD, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office made two separate firearms-related arrests in the City of Springfield over the weekend as part of what they say are ongoing patrol efforts to reduce gun violence and deter criminal activity.
Saturday deputies conducted a traffic stop on North 20th Street near Lafayette Street for improper lane use and defective equipment. During the stop, the driver, a 48-year-old Battle Creek man, was found in possession of a Smith & Wesson pistol located inside the vehicle’s glove box.
A check through the Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) confirmed the firearm had been reported stolen.
The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Calhoun County Jail on charges of Carrying a Concealed Weapon in a Motor Vehicle, Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and Felon in Possession of a Firearm
Sunday while conducting routine patrols in the area of West Michigan Avenue near Limit Street, the Sheriff’s Office says deputies observed a vehicle matching the description of one linked to recent larcenies in the City of Battle Creek. When deputies initiated a traffic stop, the driver fled on foot.
After a brief pursuit, the suspect was apprehended and found to be in possession of stolen property connected to the prior thefts.
A search of the vehicle revealed an AR-15 rifle and ammunition, which were later confirmed as stolen through LEIN.
The suspect, a juvenile from Battle Creek, was taken into custody, and a juvenile petition was submitted for Resisting and Obstructing an Officer,
Possession of a Concealed Weapon in a Motor Vehicle, and Possession of a Stolen Firearm.
