LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Michigan lawmakers are running out of days to get the state budget negotiated and approved for Fiscal Year 2026, which starts October 1.
The House and Senate have each passed a budget, but they are several billion dollars apart and discussions to reconcile the differences have not yet begun.
Senate Appropriations Committee chairwoman Sarah Anthony of Lansing says they need to find “courage and creativity” to get the talks going and need to be creative to be able to compromise.
Senator Thomas Albert of Lowell says it’s not an easy task, but says once the large framework and top-level decisions can get made, the pieces will fall together. If the budget isn’t approved by September 30, state government will shut down.
