KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo fire crews were busy this morning battling a blaze at a large commercial building.
Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety Fire Marshal Scott Brooks says crews were called out around 5:30 a.m. to a metal warehouse at Fulford Street and Lay Avenue. The first arriving units reported flames coming from the middle of the building.
Brooks said due to the size of the older building and lack fire suppression, it took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control. He says the hot, humid weather, combined with the building’s metal structure created an “oven-like” atmosphere inside, prompting crews to rotate every 10 to 15 minutes.
It’s not yet known what caused the fire, but Brooks says the interior is a total loss.
There were no reported injuries.
