PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A case of Jamestown Canyon Virus has been confirmed by the Kalamazoo County Health Department.
Officials in the city of Portage are issuing a reminder about how to keep safe from mosquito-borne illnesses like Jamestown Canyon or West Nile virus.
They say people need to use insect repellant containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-methane-diol, 2-undecanoe, or IR3535 and read the label before applying it.
You should also wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors, especially between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
Other important tips include eliminating standing water around the home from flowerpots, birdbaths, buckets, gutters, old tires and such and keep window and door screens in good repair to prevent mosquitoes from getting in the home.
People are also recommended to limit their time outdoors overnight.
