BATTLE CREEK, MI (WNWN/WTVB) – A sleepy driver who crashed into a power pole near North Helmer Road and North New Moon Terrace caused thousands in the Springfield area to lose power on Thursday.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office investigated the single-vehicle crash which was reported at 8:13 a.m. and caused North Helmer Road to be shut down.
The Sheriff’s Department reported in a press release that a 30-year-old Battle Creek man fell asleep at the wheel, veered off the road and struck the power pole.
A semi-truck then struck low-hanging power lines which caused additional damage.
Crews from Consumers Energy and Xfinity responded to restore service and repair infrastructure. Motorists were encouraged to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
The driver sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Springfield and Battle Creek Fire Departments.
