KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up for the family of a Kalamazoo woman who died following a car crash in Calhoun County on Saturday, February 24.
30-year-old Evangelina Alvarez, who was the Public Policy Coordinator for the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center Kalamazoo office, died while on her way to Henry Ford Hospital after sustaining injuries in the crash that took place around 7 a.m. on west I-94 in Marengo Township.
Authorities say Alvarez was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 37-year-old Portage man when the driver lost control, drove off the road, and struck a tree. Suffering only minor injuries, the driver was arrested by police after showing signs of intoxication.
He was arrested and lodged at the Calhoun County jail on Operating While Intoxicated causing death, tampering with evidence, and obstruction of justice charges.
GoFundMe fundraiser organizer Juliana Hafner said that Alvarez was known as “Eva” to family and friends, saying,” Eva was a strong, fearless, smart, and beautiful soul, always passionate and very committed to advocating for our community.”
