KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A 16-year-old Kalamazoo teenager has been charged with open murder now facing a possible life in prison sentence.
The Kalamazoo County Office of the Prosecuting Attorney has authorized criminal charges against Kahree Louis Compton for the shooting death of 17-year-old Jashan Omar Jones around 4 p.m. on Friday, December 16 in the 1000 block of Interfaith Boulevard on Kalamazoo’s Northside.
According to a news release dated Wednesday, December 21, Compton is charged with one count of open murder and one count of using a firearm to commit a felony.
The release goes onto say that after reviewing the facts of the case, the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney has initiated automatic waiver proceedings against Compton, as allowed by Michigan law. An automatic waiver allows the prosecution to charge a juvenile defendant in adult court if they are between 14 and 18 years of age and are alleged to have committed certain offenses.
Jones passed away in the hospital one day later following the shooting.
