KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Portage man is dead following a crash on Sprinkle Road Monday morning, November 14.
Michigan State Police say the crash happened on Sprinkle Road near the I-94 overpass around 8:30 a.m.
Authorities say a black Toyota SUV was heading northbound on Sprinkle Road when the driver, a 51-year-old Portage man, tried to pass another vehicle. The SUV then sideswiped the other vehicle, lost control, ran off the roadway and crashed into a utility pole.
First responders had to extricate the man from the vehicle and take him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died a short time later.
Consumers Energy personnel were called out to the crash site due to live wires, and the northbound lane of Sprinkle Road was shut down for several hours.
The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
According to Michigan State Police, both drivers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash which remains under investigation.
