KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Organizers say that after several years of gaining input and ongoing planning, sufficient funds have been raised to begin in Kalamazoo on Phase 1 construction of what will be one of the largest natural playscapes in an urban core.
The Children’s Nature Playscape on Bronson Park has signed a contract with Only Outdoor Living to begin the process of transforming the current 130’ by 130’ greenspace at 302 Academy Street into a nature inspired space for children.
“Our goal is to provide a safe and accessible space that serves young children of all abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds with a place to play and explore — a space that allows them to interact freely and creatively with the natural world,” said Jody Brylinsky, Children’s Nature Playscape on Bronson Park Steering Committee chair.
The process of gathering input from the community began in October 2019, which then evolved into the playscape design.
Initial funding of the playscape was provided by First Congregational Church to allow purchase of the property and necessary site preparation. Other fundraising began to secure funds from local foundations, philanthropic organizations and community members.
Design features include an accessible paved walkway, low level log benches for children and artistic benches for adults throughout the playscape. Signage will be inclusive and culturally appropriate, meeting the needs of children families with visual or physical challenges.
The playscape will be bordered by native tall grass, shrubs, and plants that should create a sense of neighborhood and home. Much of the transformation will occur next spring with landscape improvements and installation of age-appropriate play structures, including a pondless water stream and grass turf.
A formal ground-breaking ceremony will be held in early spring of 2022.
