KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – After months of being scrutinized for her performance as Kalamazoo Township treasurer, Sherine Miller has stepped down.
A letter from her attorney says Miller was stripped of her core statutory duties by the township board without any proper legal authority and based on allegations regarding her performance “that are inaccurate or lack full context.” The statement says “the Board created an untenable situation in which Ms. Miller could no longer serve in the manner the voters intended.”
Attorney Brad Sysol says Miller was prepared to pursue legal action to restore her authority as Treasurer and to protect the integrity of that office, but instead has decided to agree to a resolution that avoids further litigation and continued division within the Township.
A third-party report commissioned by the board found Miler was incapable of completing the duties of the elected position, putting the township’s finances at risk.
In January, the Board of Trustees voted to censure Miller, limit her access to financial systems, and restrict the amount of time she can spend in the office. In February the trustees formally requested Governor Whitmer remove Miller from office.
Miller’s resignation is effective Monday, March 16.
The Board of Trustees will now have the ability to appoint a replacement.
