MARENGO TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A Detroit-bound Amtrak train carrying 107 passengers lost engine power and became immobile Thanksgiving evening during cold and snowy conditions in Calhoun County’s Marengo Township near Marshall.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office was called to the scene around 8:45 p.m., and they say deputies and partner agencies worked together for several hours under challenging circumstances “to ensure the safety and wellbeing of everyone on board.”
Some passengers were evacuated from the train cars and transported by Marshall Public Schools buses to the Amtrak station in downtown Battle Creek. Remaining passengers were transferred to a second Amtrak train that arrived at the scene.
The Sheriff’s Office says all passengers were safely relocated and no injuries were reported.
Assisting the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office with the evacuation were the Marengo Township Fire Department, Marshall Police Department, Marshall Area Firefighters Ambulance Authority, Calhoun County Consolidated Dispatch Authority, and Marshall Public Schools.
