BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Battle Creek police are putting out a warning for people to be on alert for a new email scam of fraudulent invoices that appear to come from an official city of Battle Creek email account.
Two people reported getting the emails to police.
The messages included invoices for rezoning application approvals and instructed them to reply for wire transfer instructions. The emails did not include a phone number and said all correspondence must be done through email for auditing purposes.
Police Chief Shannon Bagley says the scam “appears to target public information, like meeting agendas, and uses it to trick people into thinking they’re conducting official city business.”
A similar scam targeted the Grand Rapids City Planning Commission earlier this year.
Police say anyone who receives a suspicious email should contact Battle Creek Police or Silent Observer.
