KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Two once-contaminated sites in downtown Kalamazoo are being transformed into affordable housing and commercial space thanks to state investment and strong local partnerships.
Phil Roos, director of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy(EGLE), will be in Kalamazoo Thursday to meet with local leaders and visit those two downtown Brownfield Redevelopment projects.
Harrison Circle is a $14 million mixed-use development built on a former junkyard and auto repair shop that sat vacant for years. With the help of a $300,000 EGLE grant for cleanup, the property is now home to 80 affordable and market-rate rental units and commercial space.
Currently under construction, River’s Edge is a 7.4-acre former industrial site that will eventually include 224 mixed-income rental units, commercial space and a community center. The redevelopment is supported by a $1 million EGLE grant for remediation.
EGLE officials say following the tour, Roos will lead a roundtable with local and state leaders to discuss the impact of the projects and explore future opportunities for Brownfield Redevelopment across Kalamazoo and southwest Michigan.
