KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Local food and shelter programs in Kalamazoo County and the surrounding region covered by the United Way of South Central Michigan are eligible for a share of $466,232 in newly awarded federal funds.
The emergency funding is provided through the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program, administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The federal program is directing $185,721 for programs in Eaton and Ingham counties; $115,136 in Kalamazoo County; $70,387 in Jackson County; $62,429 in Calhoun County; and $32,559 in Clinton County.
For each area, a local board of residents determines how the funds are distributed. That board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive the funds and any additional funds available under this phase of the program.
Local governmental and private voluntary organizations are eligible to apply for the funds. United Way says special consideration will be given to organizations that serve the elderly, families with children, homeless individuals with mental or physical disabilities, and veterans.
The application deadline is April 23, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.
Funding guidelines can be found at unitedforscmi.org/fema-funding-applications. Proposals must be submitted via email. For Kalamazoo and Calhoun counties, the contact is Diane Kelly at d.kelly@uwscmi.org.
