CALHOUN COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – A large amount of what was described as a yellow powdery substance that was discovered Thursday morning at about 5:30 a.m. on Old U.S. 27 at I-94 in Calhoun County turned out to be food grade cornmeal.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy saw the substance. Since it was an unknown substance, deputies immediately blocked off the stretch of road including the highway overpass until Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Management Coordinator could respond.
An investigation determined the substance fell from the semi-trailer of a Canadian trucking company.
The company was contacted and they said the cargo was no danger to the public.
The majority of the product was cleaned up by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Some of the bio-degradable product was left and will safely degrade over time.
The Marshall Township Fire Department assisted the Sheriff’s Office in this incident.
