BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO, AM/FM) — A man has owned up to his role in the killing of 27-year-old Amber Griffin of Bedford Township.
Julice Haggerty pleaded guilty on Wednesday, May 11, to tampering with evidence in a criminal case, a crime punishable by more than 10 years in prison. However, a count of lying to a police officer during a violent crime investigation was dismissed.
Griffin was murdered by her then boyfriend at the time, Derek Horton June 23rd, 2020, who buried her in a wooded area near Battle Creek.
Authorities say Haggerty drove Horton to a hardware store to buy the shovel believed to have been used in burying Griffin’s body, near the home owned by Haggerty’s grandfather where Griffin’s blood was found.
Haggerty’s sentencing is scheduled for Friday, June 24.
27-year-old Derek Horton, who was charged with Griffin’s murder, was sentenced on Monday to between 15 and 30 years in prison in Calhoun County Circuit Court.
In March, Horton had led investigators to where he placed her body in exchange for a plea deal where he pleaded no contest to second degree murder, which carries a minimum 15 year sentence.
